Coney Island Hot Dogs

Coney Island Hot Dogs pile a finely textured, chili-spiced beef sauce over snappy all-beef franks, then finish with yellow mustard and crisp diced onions for a bold, savory bite. The sauce simmers to a rich, slightly smoky depth with cumin, chili powder, and a hint of cayenne. Perfect for game day, casual cookouts, or a nostalgic weekend dinner.

Coney Island Hot Dogs
  1. 1

    Assemble all the ingredients.

  2. 2

Combine ground beef, water, 1/2 cup diced onion, ketchup, butter, garlic, chili powder, salt, black pepper, cumin, celery salt, and cayenne pepper in a pot. Using a potato masher or spatula over medium-high heat, mix until the mixture is finely ground and starts to bubble, about 10 minutes.

  3. 3

Bring the beef mixture to a simmer, lower the heat to medium-low, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and reduces, about 1 hour. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. 4

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the hot dogs in the boiling water until heated through, 5 to 7 minutes.

  5. 5

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Arrange the hot dog buns on a baking sheet. Bake the buns in the preheated oven until soft and warm, 2 to 3 minutes.

  6. 6

Place 1 bun on a plate. Set a hot dog in the bun and spoon the meat sauce on top. Drizzle yellow mustard and some of the remaining diced onion over the meat sauce. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs.

  7. 7

    Enjoy!
