Preheat an outdoor grill to medium heat and lightly oil the grate.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and the garlic; cook and stir until softened, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in the lemon juice and the salt. Place the scallops in a large bowl and toss with the butter mixture; let stand for about 2 minutes.
