Skillet-Grilled Tilapia with Lemon and Red Onion

Skillet-Grilled Tilapia with Lemon and Red Onion brings bright citrus and peppery notes to tender, flaky fish, balanced by the gentle sweetness of sautéed red onion and a hint of garlic. A light touch of Parmesan melts over the top for a subtle, nutty finish. It’s ideal for a quick lunch or a simple weeknight dinner when you want something fresh and satisfying.

Skillet-Grilled Tilapia with Lemon and Red Onion
  1. 1

Squeeze lemon juice over the tilapia; season lightly with salt and black pepper.

  2. 2

Heat olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Melt 1/2 teaspoon butter in the hot oil. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic; cook and stir until the onion starts to turn translucent, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

Lower the heat to medium-low. Push the onion mixture to the sides of the skillet. Melt the remaining 1/2 teaspoon butter in the skillet. Place the tilapia in the center of the skillet and cover it with the onion mixture. Cover the skillet and cook the tilapia until it begins to turn golden, about 5 minutes. Push the onion mixture to the sides again and flip the tilapia. Cover and cook until the second side is golden and flakes easily with a fork, about 5 minutes more.

  4. 4

Take the skillet off the heat. Top the tilapia with grated Parmesan cheese, cover, and let it stand until the cheese melts, 2 to 3 minutes.
