  1. 1

Put the warm water, salt, egg, and 2 tablespoons butter into the bread machine pan. Add the bread flour, then sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar along the edge of the pan. Make a shallow well in the flour and add the yeast. Close the lid and select the DOUGH cycle.

  2. 2

While the dough mixes, combine the prunes, prune juice, 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and lime juice in a saucepan.

  3. 3

Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat to low and simmer until the prunes are soft and the sauce has thickened, about 15 minutes.

  4. 4

Remove from the heat and blend in a mixer or food processor until smooth.

  5. 5

When the bread machine finishes the dough cycle, move the dough to a lightly floured surface.

  6. 6

Divide the dough into 20 small, egg-sized pieces.

  7. 7

Cover with greased plastic wrap and let sit for 10 minutes.

  8. 8

In a small bowl, combine 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup flour.

  9. 9

Stir in the melted butter and 1 teaspoon cinnamon to form a crumbly streusel.

  10. 10

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  11. 11

Grease a large baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

  12. 12

Shape the kolache dough into balls and set them on the prepared baking sheet.

  13. 13

Press a shallow indentation in the center of each and fill with the prune filling.

  14. 14

Top each kolache with streusel. Let the kolaches rise until doubled in size, about 20 minutes.

  15. 15

Bake until the tops are lightly browned, 14 to 16 minutes.
