Skillet Asparagus with Caramelized Onions and Walnuts

Skillet Asparagus with Caramelized Onions and Walnuts pairs tender-crisp spears with gently browned onions kissed with balsamic for a sweet-savory depth, finished with buttery toasted walnuts for crunch. It tastes bright and earthy with a hint of tang and nutty richness—ideal as a spring side for dinner or alongside roasted meats or fish.

Skillet Asparagus with Caramelized Onions and Walnuts
  1. 1

Melt 1/2 of the ghee in a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onion and spread it into a thin layer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and starting to brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Reduce the heat if it browns too quickly; do not let it burn. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the vinegar.

  2. 2

Transfer the onion-garlic mixture to a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Wipe out the skillet and melt the remaining ghee over medium-low heat. Add the walnut pieces and cook, stirring, until crisp and lightly toasted, about 3 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.

  3. 3

Add the asparagus to the same skillet and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring frequently, until bright green, tender but still crunchy, 10 to 12 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Plate the asparagus, add the onion mixture, and garnish with the walnuts.
