Texas Toast “Maid Rites”

Texas Toast “Maid Rites” layers loose, well-seasoned ground beef over garlicky Texas toast, then finishes with melted cheddar and tangy pickle chips. The beef is lightly sauced with Worcestershire, soy, vinegar, and a touch of brown sugar for a savory-sweet balance. It’s a hearty, open-faced sandwich ideal for busy weeknights or casual game-day bites.

  1. 1

Gather the ingredients. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

  2. 2

Heat a large skillet over medium-high. Add the ground beef and the onion; cook, stirring often to break up the meat, until the meat is browned in spots and no longer pink and the onion is softened, about 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  3. 3

While the meat cooks, whisk the broth, vinegar, brown sugar, worcestershire, salt, soy sauce, yellow mustard, and pepper together in a small bowl.

  4. 4

Stir the broth mixture into the skillet and cook, stirring often, until the sauce reduces slightly, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat.

  5. 5

Arrange the toasts in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until crisp and lightly browned on the bottoms but still soft in the center, 8 to 9 minutes.

  6. 6

Use the back of a large spoon to press into the center of each toast to form a well, leaving about a 1/4-inch border around the edge of each piece. Spoon about a heaping 1/4 cup of the meat mixture into each well. Sprinkle the meat and toasts with cheese (about 1/4 cup per toast).

  7. 7

Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) until the cheese is just melted and the toasts are crisp, about 5 minutes.
