  1. 1

Arrange the bread cubes in a single layer on 2 large baking sheets; let them dry for 3 hours to overnight.

  2. 2

Set the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) with the racks in the lower- and upper-middle positions. Grease a 3-quart baking dish.

  3. 3

Toast the bread cubes in the preheated oven until golden, 12 to 15 minutes.

  4. 4

Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  5. 5

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and celery; cook, stirring, until soft, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl.

  6. 6

Stir in the bread cubes, chicken broth, eggs, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and black pepper; mix well. Transfer to the prepared baking dish; cover with aluminum foil.

  7. 7

Bake in the preheated oven until steamy, about 30 minutes. Remove the foil; bake until the top is crusty, about 10 minutes more. Serve immediately.
