Mom's Breakfast Strata

Mom's Breakfast Strata layers torn bread with cheddar, ham, mushrooms, peppers, and onions, all soaked in a rich egg-and-milk custard. After an overnight rest, it bakes into a golden, cheesy casserole with savory edges and a tender, custardy center—perfect for leisurely weekends, holiday mornings, or feeding a hungry crowd.

Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Arrange half of the torn bread in an even layer on the bottom. Evenly sprinkle the mushrooms and green bell pepper over the bread. Sprinkle with half of the cheese. Add the remaining bread pieces on top, then layer the onion and ham over them. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Whisk the eggs and milk together; pour over the entire dish. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours.

  2. 2

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  3. 3

Bake covered for 35 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the top is evenly browned.
