Our Apple Butter

Our Apple Butter delivers a velvety, deeply spiced spread made from blended McIntosh apples slowly cooked with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and a hint of vanilla. It tastes rich, warmly sweet, and perfectly smooth, ideal for toast, biscuits, pancakes, or swirled into yogurt. A great make-ahead fall staple to jar, freeze, and enjoy anytime.

  1. 1

Place the apples in a blender in batches and blend until no large chunks remain. Transfer the mixture to a slow cooker.

  2. 2

Add the white sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger to the slow cooker and stir to combine.

  3. 3

Cook uncovered on High for 1 hour. Cover the slow cooker and continue cooking on High for 6 to 8 hours, stirring twice per hour, until smooth. Uncover and cook, stirring, for 2 to 4 hours more, until thick and spreadable.

  4. 4

Meanwhile, check eleven 4-ounce jars for cracks and rings for rust, discarding any that are defective. Keep them immersed in simmering water until the apple butter is ready. Wash new, unused lids and rings in warm, soapy water.

  5. 5

Spoon the apple butter into the sterilized jars, filling to within 1 inch of the top, then seal and freeze.
