Combine the sugar and red wine in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Add the cranberries, orange zest, and the cinnamon stick. Return to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, stirring often, until most of the cranberries have burst, 10 to 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, check six 4-ounce jars for cracks and the rings for rust, discarding any that are defective. Keep them immersed in simmering water until the relish is ready. Wash the new, unused lids and rings in warm, soapy water.

Remove the relish from the heat and let it cool slightly. Pack the relish into the hot, sterilized jars. Wipe the rims with a moist paper towel to remove any residue. Place the lids on and screw the rings on tightly. Store in the refrigerator.
