Grandma’s Hungarian Cabbage Rolls
Grandma’s Hungarian Cabbage Rolls feature tender cabbage leaves filled with a hearty blend of beef, pork, and rice, then slow-simmered in tomato juice for a rich, comforting finish. The meat becomes succulent, the rice fluffy, and the sauce tangy-sweet—perfect for a cozy family dinner or a make-ahead meal on chilly evenings.

- 1
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Boil the cabbage until the outer leaves loosen easily from the head, 3 to 5 minutes.
- 2
Separate the leaves and let them cool. Reserve 1 ½ cups of the cooking water.
- 3
Heat oil in a large skillet. Add the onion and the garlic; cook, stirring, until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the wet rice; cook, stirring, until the moisture cooks off, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool, about 5 minutes.
- 4
Combine the beef, sausage, and egg in a large bowl. Stir in the cooled rice mixture.
- 5
Place a golf ball-sized portion of the beef mixture on the ribbed end of a cabbage leaf; roll it up, tucking in the sides. Repeat with the remaining beef mixture and cabbage leaves.
- 6
Arrange the rolls seam-side down in a slow cooker. Cover with tomato juice. Pour the reserved cooking water over the top.
