  1. 1

Finely chop enough onion to make 1/4 cup. Reserve the rest of the onion.

  2. 2

Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in 1/4 cup minced onion and 1 teaspoon taco seasoning. Cook until the onion is translucent and aromatic, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

Move the cooked onion to a medium bowl; add the ground beef, 2 teaspoons taco seasoning, and the garlic powder. Mix thoroughly and form 4 hamburger patties.

  4. 4

Pour the tomato sauce into a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the salsa and the remaining 1 teaspoon taco seasoning, then stir to combine.

  5. 5

Thinly slice the remaining onion with a mandolin and add it to the tomato mixture. Place the hamburger patties in the sauce and cook until the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees F (76 degrees C), about 5 minutes per side.

  6. 6

Toast the hamburger buns if you like. Place the hamburger patties and sauce on the buns, along with any other desired toppings.
